Points of interest.

Carrots:

Apart from being an excellent root vegetable full of Vitamin C and fibre, guess what?

They also help tCarrotso keep your dog's teeth clean!

This only works if you feed them raw, as the biting action on the molar and premolars helps to massage the gums and remove plaque.

COD LIVER OIL

Cod Liver Oil has been around for many hundreds of years.

The Eskimo Indians and the early tribesemen all knew the benefits of Cod Liver Oil, especially in the winter.

And, yes it is good for your dog.

If you start your puppy quite young, just under 4 - 6 months then your dog will benefit all of his life. It helps with the very large massive breeds because as the puppy grows, one of the main things that can be affected is the joints. And that is every joint in the body, including the spine.

If a very heavy puppy is bounding around as they do, then Cod Liver Oil can help protect the joints and the cartlidge and the bone. It works by lubricating the joint so that the cartlidge is flexible and the bone rolls evenly and the joint isn't dry. So therefore, it helps to protect against wear and tear of the joint.

All working dogs i.e.. Show dogs, obedience dogs and most certainly agility dogs and working trials dogs, police dogs and mountain search and rescue dogs, should all have Cod Liver Oil included in their diet.  It is also beneficial to the pet dog.  It not only looks after the joints, it also works on the whole body, including muscles and tendons.  It also gives them a lovely soft shiny coat.

It is certainly beneficial in the winter when dogs can get damp and cold and that can happen if dogs are kennelled outdoors over a long period of time.

With the elderly dog they will get rheumatics and they get cold and they get stiff and Cod Liver Oil can certainly help for the dog to get increased mobility in the joints. fish With an elderly dog you can give slightly more until the condition improves, then return to the stated dose.  The same applies to youngsters who suffer from joint and bone pain as they grow.

Please make sure that you read the instructions as you can overdose.

Garlic & Brewers Yeast

Points of interest. Did you know that if you feed your dog a daily dose of garlic and Brewers Yeast apart from the health benefits, it will also deter fleas!

Apparently, the fleas do not like the taste of the dog's blood. To a certain extent I can vouch for this, as for many years I fed garlic and Vetzymes, and I must admit that my dogs didn't seem to have the same amount of fleas as other dogs and they certainly didn,t suffer with allergic reactions to fleas. But I believe that garlic is a natural internal antiseptic. It also good for the circulation, the heart and a general all round internal cleanser.

Brewers Yeast can be brought from any Health store or Chemist.

Ask your Vet about the dosage if you are not sure.

Below is garlic and it's medical uses appertaining to the dog.

What is Garlic?

Garlic is rich in alkaline salts and sulphur compounds.

How garlic acts on the system...

Garlic acts as a tonic and a blood purifier which helps the heart and improves the circulation.

On a regular basis, it wards off colds and influenza

Helpful pet recipe.

This recipe will make a useful embrocation that you can use for sprains and rheumatic pain but more than anything, when used sparingly to spots or rashes it will ease and aid healing - useful if you don't want to use drugs.

Crush several cloves and add the juice to 230gms (½lb) of lard.
As the lard softens in a saucepan over a low heat, then pour into ointment jars and allow to solidify and use as required.

As we see, garlic is certainly of use to not only the human race, but of use to our pet dogs. A daily dose of garlic is recommended and we are also led to believe that it can ward off colds and influenza, so I would say a must for the winter months, and certainly a must for the older dog.

This would certainly help working dogs, as it keeps their system well toned as it is a tonic, so ideal for dogs that need to work for many hours in all weathers which can lead them to become stressed. Also a must for the active dog who is doing agility training or working over rough terrain as it will keep their circulation in good order and will help with jarring of the bones and limbs.
