WHAT MAKES AN AGGRESSIVE DOG?

This is a question that I have been asked time and again over the decades. It is also a problem that I have had to solve many, many times over the years.

There are a number of reasons as to why a dog turns aggressive. Some dogs are being defensive more than aggressive. Whatever the reason, the problem can only lay at one door, and that is Man's.

Dogs are domesticated animals and have been for thousands of years. The dog has evolved with Man and Man has bred into different breeds different instincts.

One of these is aggression.

Whether it be towards other dogs or towards people, or aggression brought about being bred to kill. An instinct that has been nurtured by Man has cost many dogs their lives.

It still gets to me when I think of the amount of abuse and neglect that Man inflicts on this most loyal of companions,

YET if the dog DARE to challenge Man, he is put down, no matter what the reason may be!

The reasons can be varied. It may be a dog guarding his territory or a dog that has been tormented by children, or it may be that through either his breeding or a highly intelligent dog not being trained, whatever the reason we seem to have this "holier than thou" attitude and death is the sentence issued.

There are some bad attacks on people and children, and if you look very closely at the majority of these cases, it has been caused by either the owners stupidity, neglect or cruelty. Sadly, it is often the innocent that get attacked.

Nearly all attacks can be avoided and listed below are some of the ways.

Nearly all attacks can be avoided and listed below are some of the ways.

  1. Never leave a child or baby alone with a dog.

  2. Do not treat your dog as a baby. Some dogs take this as a weakness in you and take control.

  3. Some breeds are more disposed to aggression than others, some breeds have been bred to show aggression when challenged. Some towards dogs, some towards Humans.

  4. Don't buy a dog that has been bred to be bold and confident if all you want is a family softy! Always check what the dog has been bred for. Any dog that has been bred to guard and protect unless well trained, will never be a softy and will always need watching. A lot of the smaller breeds have been bred to hunt and kill, so you can imagine if they have a bone or a toy and you decide to take it off the dog, some of these breeds will really take you to task and you WON'T get if off them! They are not bred to back off, here again look at the breeds, study them talk to the people that own them and get the right advice.

  5. Early socialising is vital. And I stress VITAL. Get the puppy out, to the local park, show him his world. Let him know what's out there - cars bikes, legs, other dogs, loud noises, screaming children. Show him what his life will entail.

  6. The last but the most important. To stop aggression of any type or description manifesting itself before the dog is a year old,
    GET HIM TRAINED.
There are training classes you can travel to, or there are trainers who will visit your home and who will help and advise you to stop aggression before it can ever really be formed.

Breeds like the German Shepherd dog, the Rottweiler and the Dobermann and other large guarding breeds are known for their courage in defending their owners and their property. © Janet Wesley
