BASIC TRAINING
Safety in the Car
A debatable subject. It is probably best that your dog learns to sit or lie in the back. With an estate car, it is possible to use a dog guard or cage. This then restricts the dog or dogs to the very back of the car. A large hatchback can also be filled with a dog guard. In a van a dog guard or cage can confine the dog. There are seat belts for dogs. Some people use them but most handlers do not like them as their dogs struggle in them which can be dangerous and cause an accident by distracting the driver. When the whole family are travelling in the car, do not allow the children to start playing with the dog, or getting the dog excited in any way. Perhaps as well as dog training classes, children training classes would be a good idea, especially in the summer holidays! Generally speaking, if you have an estate or a hatch back then a dog guard is a good idea. With dog guards, fit one that can be removed quickly in case of an accident. |
